  1. Interesting shot. One part of me wants to know what is inhibiting lichen growth along that crack – it must be leaching something out that they don’t want to grow near to. Whatever it is, the photo is helped by it.

    • Thanks, ehpem. I think some of these headstones have cracked and separated and they were cleaned up and repaired at some point, maybe even recently. I think they may have cleaned a portions of the face of the stone for the repair, otherwise the lichen growth would be fairly uniform.

      • I was thinking maybe there was a mortar or concrete in the crack repair that has different acidity which disagrees with lichen. But, I could see the cleaning theory being more likely since they take so long to grow.
